Step One
Check to see if the person is breathing and has a pulse.
Step Two
If you cannot feel a pulse and the person is not breathing, immediately call for emergency help.
SIDE NOTE: Because there is no time to lose, move quickly, ask anyone for help, speak loudly and clearly, and announce that you are seeking an AED. AEDs are accessible in public places and are normally kept in wall-mounted cases similar to fire extinguishers.
Step Three
Step Four
Step Five
Turn on the automated external defibrillator. The machine will give you step-by-step voice instructions explaining how to check for breathing, check for a pulse, and how/where to position the electrode pads on the person’s chest.
When the pads are in place, the AED automatically measures the person’s heart rhythm and determines if a shock is needed. If it is, the machine tells the administer to stand back and push the button to deliver the shock. The AED is also programmed to not deliver a shock if the shock isn’t needed.
After the shock is delivered, administer CPR if it is needed. The AED will also guide users through CPR. The process can be repeated as needed until emergency response team take over.
